Seems inefficient to cache an entire mail store on the local host via
SLIP before reading it -- regardless of whether AFS is used, in which
case an even longer wait would be required to allow for the server
callback transfer.

Presumably you have access to an AFS host at the worksite? If so,
wouldn't it be more efficient to telnet from your home AFS host to one
at work, and let the remote host's cache manager fetch & store your mail
over the local high-speed network? This way, you bring only the
messages you wish to read over the slow SLIP link, leaving the bulk
tucked away in your home area for subsequent browsing. (The drawback to
this approach, of course, is that you can't use a fancy gui to read mail
-- but an emacs/mh MUA should work fine).
