AFS authentication takes two group slots.  (Try executing ``groups''
after authenticating.)  Might the ``famd'' program be seeing too many
groups in use?  Can you reduce the number of them? 

I just wonder if your account is getting more groups with NIS enabled
than with it disabled.  Alternatively, whether your system uses a lower
limit for the max number of groups when NIS is in service.
