(I tried sending this earlier this week but it must have been eaten by a grue.
o well.)

Folks,

Last fall I asked about interest in reviving the AFS Users Group meetings, now
that Decorum is dead.

Then I kinda fell off the planet. I apologize.

The truth is, I got very little response. About 5 people said they'd be happy
to offer a paper or talk about something, and another three or four said they'd
come. Many had lots of restrictions (although, I did ask for them :-), from
time of year to location. Some people, notably those from outside the US,
requested it be tied in with another conference so that it'd make it easier for
him to come.

Aha.

Well, the folks running the LISA conference (the Usenix conference Systems
Administrators, http://www.usenix.org/events/lisa2000/) seem to like the idea
of picking up some of the Decorum slack. This year, I don't think there will
be a real AFSUG there. However, I have proposed:

a) An AFS "workshop". Workshops are often called "overgrown BOFs". In
reality, the proposed AFS workshop would include both papers/talks about works
done or in progress AND discussions about problems, ideas, and other topics.

b) A repeat of the AFS tutorial offered last year. This is geared toward the
mid-level AFS administrator. We don't want to run an advanced class because to
do it right would require source access, and many sites don't have this. So
the class assumes you're looking to broaden a basic AFS knowledge.

c) Possible "guru is in" and BOF sessions, both of which are "I have this
problem anyone have any ideas?" gatherings.

I realize that this is heavy on AFS (and Arla), but I've little knowledge of
DFS. In retrospect I should have dug someone up who does speak DFS and dragged
them into this mess.

I'm really hoping that this is successful at this year's LISA so that next year
maybe we can expand further, perhaps fleshed out into more and with more DFS
topics, too (if anyone's still running the stuff by then :-).

e.

p.s. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that some folks going to Usenix2000
are planning an AFS/Kerberos BOF but I leave it to them to spill the details
:-).
