A newer version of the AFS client for Windows 95, 98 and Me (Millennium
Edition) is now available in Transarc's AFS Contribution Area. A list of
problems fixed and changes made is attached below.
As usual, this contributed program can be accessed through the
/afs/transarc.com/public/afs-contrib/bin/win9x.client directory (or
/afs/transarc.com/public/afs-contrib/bin.export/win9x.client from outside
North America).
IBM users can access through the transarc.com cell on the IBM intranet
using the same pathnames.
To install over any earlier version of the program, run the installation
program twice. The first pass would remove the old installation.
This AFS client program was developed as a part of the efforts of an IBM
research project, called Ufiler, which aims at providing a highly scalable
file storage solution suitable for needs ranging from small office/home
office, enterprises, to multi-business data centers. We welcome comments,
questions, and bug reports. Please contact the UFiler team at the IBM
Almaden Research Center at the following email address.

Problems fixed and changes made since last release:
1. The driver was upgraded (sock.vxd) to support suspend/resume power.
This change eliminates the need to re-boot during certain errors. Most
error conditions can be cleared by just restarting the AFS Control Panel.
NOTE: Using the Task Manager to force termination of the AFS Control Panel
(Winafsload.EXE) or the AFS Client Console (AFSD.EXE) will put Windows into
an unstable state and may require rebooting.
2. Power Suspend/Resume support
a. Win95 waits for 20 seconds after power resume before it attempts
Authentication
b. Win98 & Win95 show the Progress bar during the power resume process.
c. Win98 does not require a 20 second pause and becomes available for
use when the power resume cycle is finished.
d. Win95 will not respond to Power Suspend Deny; therefore, Win95 will
always suspends; even if there are open files. Win98 will not power
suspend if there are open files on an AFS drive.
3. Cosmetic changes to the Progress bar provide more activity and color.
Repaired blanking out of the progress bar time display during its
operation. Cosmetic changes were made to 'Whirling World'; matching
background of Icon to background of Dialog box.
4. AFS Control Panel checks tokens for expiration twice (instead of once a
minute).
5. 'Force dismount' was added to dismount box. Windows has several
conditions when applications are closed and the file system thinks the
associated files are open.
6. AFS Control Panel forces the user to enter a share name for every Drive
Letter Mapping.
7. Help file has been added.
8. Changes made to AFS Control Panel - Maintenance Menu.
a. Enter Alt-S to add the Maintenance menu to the Title Bar. When you
'Right Click' the title bar you see three extra options.
1. 'Capture Events To Windows' - this display a window that captures
AFS client activity. (To clear the AFS Activity Log, right click the title
bar on log window).
2. 'Capture Events to file' - sends AFS client activity to a log file:
AFSCLI.LOG
3. 'View Afs Client (Toggle)' - Shows/Hides the AFS Client Console
window.
9. Command line options:
a. show - show AFS Client Console window during connection.
b. log - log Afs client activity to file: AFSCLI.LOG
c. userid: - preset user id
d. password: - preset password
c. connect - automatically log into a AFS cell using userid/password.
10. Some terminology changes were made for consistency.
11. New 'Setting' option was added to the AFS Control Panel; Set
Autoconnect and AFS Client activity log options.
12. Page fault was corrected when the AFS Control Panel loaded. This only
occurred if LOG on and previously the AFS Client Console failed to
terminate properly.
