Did you use then "-force" option?
If that doesn't work you may want to see if the vos rename
comamnd on the "real" volume will change the that volume's
ID. If I had to guess I would say that the volume ID value
will not change :-( If it does change, then the salvage of
the off-line volume could be completed.
