It appears to me like there's sufficient support to change the design
(i.e. empirically it seems like about half the contributors to this subject
agree that locking should be added as an option).  Indeed, maybe it already
has; the new edit options described by Noel recently might be adequate, if
they operate on a per-branch basis.  I'll check them out as time permits.
