RFC 2222.  In brief, it's a mechanism for pluggable authentication with
several different predefined types (including Kerberos, among others).
It's somewhat more general than PAM; IIRC, PAM is mostly structured for
things that have passwords or the equivalent and doesn't deal as well with
challenge-response sorts of mechanisms.

It's pretty straightforward to implement; I've done it before.
