It is.  When you run it, it waits for auth. to begin.  Enter or Ctrl C
should
stop it.

But how does the line you've put in inetd.conf look like?  It sounds
like that
is the problem.  (You might have misspelled pserver, as someone
suggested, then
you'd get that response).
