The version of the file you had wasn't the version that CVS thought you
had.  So, when it tried to patch it back to 1.2, the patch worked but
the resulting file had a different checksum than 1.2 should have had, so
CVS gave up and fetched a correct copy instead.  As to how you got into
this situation in the first place, it's usually by changing a file
somehow without changing the timestamp.
