You forgot the most important part; edit the files, and then "cvs commit".
CVS automaticly updates the "live" files in $CVSROOT/CVSROOT.

Also, I would never go to town right after doing any changes in system
configuration.  It's better to check and doublecheck that everything works
well before going offline.
