plug the laptop into, just copying everything over would be simpler.

There is no way I know of to merge repositories, and it seems to me
it would be extremely difficult to modify CVS to support it.  What
cvsup does is allow efficient maintenance of a slave repository
while allowing some independent work there, and this is not the
same thing.
