Well, here is what I got:

$ CVS -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/noffle rlog ChangeLog
CVS log: warning: the rlog command is deprecated
CVS log: use the synonymous log command instead
CVS log: cannot open CVS/Entries for reading: No such file or directory
CVS [log aborted]: no repository

Using just the log command gave similar results.  From the man page I
gather that the (r)log command *does* need a working directory :-(
