Possibly only gmail smtp related.

Get latest GNUS from CVS. Google for it. Although I notice that I'm
using 0.4. Hmm.

You are already using 22.0.50 I see. Me too : debian snapshot.

It should work. Here is my relevant .gnus.el :

(setq message-send-mail-function 'smtpmail-send-it)
(setq smtpmail-default-smtp-server "smtp.gmail.com")
(setq smtpmail-smtp-server "smtp.gmail.com")
(setq smtpmail-smtp-service 587)

And google up fs-change-smtp : it includes the tls negotiation stuff
too.

"works for me finally".

best of luck.
