Get a copy of Electronic Flash, Strobe, by Edgerton, last published by the MIT
Press. Likely available elsewhere. Kerr and Faraday shutters are described in
some detail, and there are many references. Both in the past were limited to
approximately 1 microsecond open time. You were not specific about what you are
modulating the image to, and you may find that gated intensifiers will provide
an off-the-shelf solution to your problem, possibly in conjunction with an
electronic imaging system.
