1. The students do have email accounts by default because it comes with
the individual accounts we give them on the server. But they don't know
it and we don't tell them.
2. They are allowed to use their personal hotmail, yahoo mail,
etc. accounts before and after school and only after permissions signed by
parents and students and only in my lab where I can read anything they
write or receive if I chose to. This used to be popular but is hardly
used now because they all have email at home (where probably no one is
reading everything.)
We do have many students taking AP classes and use their email nearly
everyday for that.
We have some teachers who ask the students to email them certain
assignments. Also, some students work on an assignment and email it to
themselves to be able to access it from their email at school. (Or email
it home so they can finish it at home.) When they tell me what they are
doing we allow all of that and have had almost no problems.
