Ok, I finally got all the ay down here…

We do not allow access to hotmail, it is blocked at the firewall. The reason being that we have on numerous occasions had reason to suspect we were getting nailed on adware and spyware from hotmail accounts.

As for the e-mail accounts, we’re kind of in limbo on that. Previous policy was that all students got email, I suspect that was due to the GroupWise integration with Netware, but we are slowly starting to move to a case by case basis. Basically if someone requests an account, we give them one, if I think that they want it for a frivolous reason, I tell them to route the request through their principal, and if they do that, I figure they probably have a reason serious enough to be given email.

It’s not a hard and fast policy, but it mostly works.

Would like to know from you this fall – Do you:

1.                   Issue email accounts to students?

2.                   Give students access to their personal hotmail accounts from school?

I’ll send out these results.

Thanks,

C.
