While certainly agree with re-imaging machines, there are a few things you can do to significantly improve performance on a routine basis.
One of our staff has created a program that enumerates all profiles on a machine, deletes files from the temp and temp internet directories in each of those profiles, then deletes files from the \TEMP and \Windows\Temp directories, and removes the windows update uninstall directories. It then runs JKDefrag on the drive. We have pushed this out to run on a scheduled task weekly. It has really improved the performance of systems. I can check with him to see if he would allow me to send it to anyone, if any one wants it...
