I had the same problem this summer . . . and nothing was marked as
multi or single. The color coding advice (orange multi, yellow
single) -- and then Jim Kerns had some advice about a number being
printed on multi confirmed it for me (I think it was an S something
and maybe had the numbers 60 on it). I later learned the yellow
coming into the building was single and the orange running in the
building were multi. I, too, have some spares. I learned the hard
way to have some on hand. I went through AOS in Omaha.

What color is the fiber cable? Orange is usually Multi-Mode and Yellow
is usually Single-mode. Since it is just feeding one wing of your
school, my guess would be that it is multi-mode fiber.

Ok, so bear with the novice here, how do I tell the difference by
looking at it? I didn't install it so I am not sure the details.

The important thing is to find out if it is single mode or multimode

OK, I found out why one wing of my building had such terribly slow
network speeds. There is a 10meg Media converter running to that end
of the building. How do I know what to replace it with, I don't know
much about fiber. THe patch cable connects to the switch in this
closet and then fiber runs to the other closet. I have attached a
picture of what is currently in there.
