It is one thing to waste your own time at work. That is professionalism and/or the lack of it. It is another thing to waste someone else's time at work.

I know that with our staff, it is very difficult to determine what is their work, what is work-related, and what is best accomplished after work. Some of them would prefer to not make the distinction, but being able to do so is what defines a professional.

I was raised by blue collars, and using your job's resources for your own personal gain is to be avoided. Using your job's resources for another entity is a conflict of interest. My dad would fire someone for taking tools home and working on other people's cars. He'd fire someone for bringing cars from business "B" to his business to profit business "B" at his expense.

I love to volunteer my expertise to worthy causes, and I love charging $60/hour for not so worthy causes. I'd never allow them to interfere with the agencies business.

I am with Tim also. I will help if there is a benefit to the school district. No I do not charge them.

I think the bigger issue is that the teacher seems to be doing outside work on school time for you Chad. If it is their "duty free" lunch, that is one thing, but passing in the hall or their plan period seems a little off to me. But I too have been guilty of sending personal e-mails during school hours or doing personal research during hours. Fine line and I hate to try to establish it. I do not get paid enough to make that call.

That being said, If someone asks me to look at their home computer, I tell them it is $50/hour for me to come over.

And I told one teacher who was having an issue printing off her Ticket Master Tickets on the school color laser that I would not help her do that as it was a misuse of school property.

My 2 cents
