Well, I think many times the concentration of power in one place is what
leads to its misuse.

Dude, you are so wrong. AOL is NOT based on MSIE. However, the default
browser for AOL is MSIE. That is a big difference. And it has been this
way ever since AOL signed a binding contract with Microsoft a long time ago,
5 years now?. Once the contract with Microsoft runs out AOL will switch to
their own version of Netscape. This is probably one of the main reasons
that AOL bought Netscape in the first place. They wanted to have a fully
customizable option to IE once the contract ran out.
The original interface for AOL was proprietary software written by AOL's
software engineers. This software handled connecting to the different POP
(Points of Presence) which AOL piggy-backed on, e.g. Sprint, etc.

I wouldn't say that their largest shortcoming is that they are too big. I
believe that is one of many shortcomings. Truly informed 'nay sayers'
target Microsoft and AOL because they offer an inferior product. Accesing
the Internet through an Online Service like AOL is inferior to to accessing
through a standard ISP.
