Rita,

First of all, do the CD's you are having problems with have an
autorun.inf file? Do they auto load on other computers? Is the CD drive
a multiread unit? (that may be part of your problem there.....) A couple
of things to try before going to extremes....

Click on start, settings, control panel, system. Now click the plus sign
in front of your CD ROM and then right click the name of your CD ROM.
Choose properties and then click on the settings tab. Is the autorun
option checked? If not, check it and reboot. Hopefully that will take
care of your problems. If it is checked, uncheck it, reboot, go back
into control panel and recheck it. Rebott and see if that clears the
problem. Sometimes when both virtual and legacy drivers are loaded, they
create a conflict (I call it a hiccup).

Does the unit load legacy drivers (in the autoexec.bat) instead of
virtual drivers? Check on the manufacturers web site to see if there are
newer 32 bit drivers for that specific drive.

Another thing you might try: in the system area of the control panel,
"remove" the unit. If it IS loading through the autoexec file, REM the
load lines out. Now reboot and see if your OS (I am assuming it is
WIN9X) will find and load the drive.

It may be as simple as putting a checkmark in the autorun box, or just
replacing the CD ROM drive as they are very inexpensive. (42X's are
around $20 in my neck of the woods, Central Florida). You should not
have to restructure a machine to invoke autorun.

Let me know how you make out.
