I'm looking for web-based information..... FAQ's, tutorials, etc. geared to beginner
level. I have a friend (self-described dumb-blonde but I'm not so sure) who's just
bought her first PC and dosen't have a clue. I had many references in the past but it
seems most of them have gone the way of the Edsel. The About.com sites for newbies are
so loaded with ad's and links that I don't thik she'll find help before she gets lost
there.

I got something very similar a few weeks ago from the
same or similar address. I understand that this has
been making the rounds for about 10 years now in one
form or another. Mine was for $47 million in the
dormant account of a deceased ex-pat, now about to be
seized by the government. Someone told me it's on the
urban legends site, but I haven't checked for myself.
Presumably they still get enough takers to make it
worth thier while.

It's an old scam to fool you into giving them personal information. This scam
has been around before the internet as we know it even existed. My father
told me about foreigners trying to hide or lauder large sums of money calling
him on the phone back in the early 80's with this same pitch. Since he was
a legitimate business man I suspect they got his name, address, phone
number, etc. from a mailing list or perhaps even his banking records which
was illegally made public since they seem to target the legit business type.
Sometime around 1984, a couple was going door to door confronting
business owners with this scam in my area, report these to local law
enforcement.
As for email, reporting such non-sense online is probably a
waste of time. just hit delete.
When you saw "URGENT SECRET AND CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS"
you should have imediately recognized it as spam.
