A firm has developed a method of tracking PDF document use. Not just downloads, but tracking if/when they're opened ( or not opened), forwarded to others, and even going so far to say that if the computer reading the file isn't on the Internet, the document won't open.
The last bit underscores what I feel is a soon-to-be MAJOR risk in the digital world -- namely, that without access to the Internet for software authentication and license verification (or now, data-tracking) neither your major applications nor data will be usable, even if they're sitting on a PC under your direct control. This product, and plans to offer software-as-a-subscription-service shows once again how vendors (and/or user ignorance) are slowly relinquishing our ability to work and exist in cyberspace independently of anyone (or anything) or without the permission of a remote third party. I find that quite unsettling. More info at: http://www.remoteapproach.com/remoteapproach/product-faq.asp You are a subscribed member of the infowarrior list.
