This is the same thing I've been telling various journalists today. Had Cisco simply kept quiet, this vuln would likely have been passed off relatively quietly. Sure, a few security/router experts might realize this was a major problem and huge vuln, but it likely wouldn't have received the press it did had Cisco not acted as it did.
