Why is TiVo updating its privacy policy? TiVo updates its privacy policy from time-to-time to adapt its policy to account for new service enhancements. In this instance, TiVo is updating its privacy policy to accommodate new content delivery services and home network applications. What is a Content Delivery Service and why does it require collection of Personally Identifiable Viewing Information? A content delivery service is a service that allows a TiVo subscriber to download content to its TiVo DVR. These services require TiVo to collect Personally Identifiable Viewing Information to provide the requested content to the correct TiVo DVR. TiVo will not disclose this information to Third Parties without the consent of the TiVo subscriber, although TiVo may need to disclose certain user information to a partner or vendor under a non-disclosure agreement to fulfill the subscriber¹s request. What is a Home Network Application and why should I be concerned about entering sensitive information while using a Home Network Application? TiVo subscribers with DVRs connected to a home network will be able to discover software applications on their personal computer or other network servers that will be displayed on their DVR. TiVo has no control over what applications are accessible on a home network. Most applications will be harmless, but as we have seen with freely-available software applications available on the Internet, some applications may not have the best of intentions. For instance, an application may falsely identify its source to prompt you to provide certain sensitive information or request personal information without first disclosing its privacy policy. TiVo does not permit home network applications to be discovered on TiVo DVRs unless the subscriber actively enables the discovery feature. For subscriber convenience, TiVo also identifies these unverified applications with a computer icon on the TiVo menu. If you are concerned about the privacy of your personal information, we caution you not to enter any personal or sensitive information (such as social security or credit card numbers) while using an application unless you have verified it is from a source that you trust. Why did TiVo change the language of the privacy policy from ³TiVo has no way to access any of your Personally Identifiable Viewing Information² and ³no way of knowing² what show you watch to ³TiVo does not collect or access any Personally Identifiable Viewing Information² and ³does not keep track² of what shows you watch? >From the inception of the company, TiVo¹s privacy policy has centered around the core principle that TiVo will not collect the Personally Identifiable Viewing Information of its subscribers without a subscriber¹s prior consent. This core principle has not changed and TiVo continues to value the privacy of its subscribers. As TiVo offers its subscribers more options, under certain circumstances, we recognize that it may be at least theoretically possible to correlate the behavior of a TiVo DVR with a particular account. TiVo does not, and has a strict policy against, any collection of Personally Identifiable Viewing Information without a user¹s prior consent. However, we felt that an adjustment of the language was appropriate for purposes of accuracy and integrity. tv2198 You are a subscribed member of the infowarrior list.
