This notice was at the TOP of the body of an e-mail received from a friend within DoD -- most likely an automatic thing done by their mail server: > Classification: UNCLASSIFIED > > If this e-mail is marked FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY it may be exempt from > mandatory disclosure under FOIA. DoD 5400.7R, "DoD Freedom of > Information Act Program", DoD Directive 5230.9, "Clearance of DoD > Information for Public Release", and DoD Instruction 5230.29, "Security > and Policy Review of DoD Information for Public Release" apply.
While the need to remind folks about OPSEC (operational security) is relevant and I endorse that, making special notice of DoD FOIA exemptions again raises some interesting questions; namely, what is being hidden from public/Congressional scrutiny for one reason or other. Certainly, this is an age-old question regarding the de facto way that the national security establishment operates, but still -- the questions remain, particularly since DoD has been trying to deal with the joys of the Information Revolution and open media as it prosecutes the 'war' on terror. Regardless, I found it quite interesting that this was the first time DoD directives were so eloquently spelled out in such a warning at the TOP of an e-mail message. -rick Infowarrior.org You are a subscribed member of the infowarrior list.
