Hi,

I got a quick question regarding running a backup mail server for a domain. I
understand how to set it up, as per Howie's instructions here
<http://foros.metro.com.mx/forums/Thread.cfm?CFApp=2&Thread_ID=14>.

I'd like to know why server 2, the one listed with a higher MX number, won't try to
send the mail back to itself while the primary is off-line. Meaning, the backup MTA
gets the mail, is told to relay it, does a DNS lookup, gets and tries the primary
server, then wouldn't it go to the higher MX record and try to send to itself? Is
there something built into the MTA or the protocol that would prevent this?

Or, does the backup MTA have to be configured to send all mail through the primary
server, w/out performing a lookup?

Inquiring minds want to know...

TIA,
-Max
