We can send 800,000 static emails per hour (Dual PIII 866, RAID 5 - 15K rpm
SCSI drives and 2GB RAM) and peak close to 1,000,000. These were 3k to 5k
text emails. Static HTML emails about 15k avg we have seen maybe a 10% drop
off. I think we had averaged about 700,000 per hour.
Dynamic is the killer and depends greatly on CPU and your application
server. On this box, with CF4.5 sp2, we can send about 250,000 to 300,000
3k to 5k dynamic emails per hour. By dynamic, I mean personalized content
and tracking urls in the email body. HTML emails with dynamic content has
been a drag on the system with an anemic 80,000 per hour.
We are now in the process of implementing a system like this:
2 clustered CF app servers - Dell 6450 (4 PIII Xenon with 2MB cache and 4GB
RAM) - with SCSI attached storage using an array of RAID 5 15k SCSI drives -
these will do nothing, but build emails 24/7
then spread the mail across 6 dual PIII 1Ghz machines with 2GB RAM and their
own RAID 5 15k SCSI drives. - these will do nothing but post email 24/7
We should have this implemented this fall.
Yes... email is critical to our business.
One last thing... Defrag your drives often if sending a lot of email!!!

Subject: [iMS] Post Server Statistics
Hi All,
I am trying to gather some information on what IMS is capable of sending
out. I know there is a number Howie put out there that says IMS Enterprise
can send about 30million e-mails a day, which I believe is based on 2K mail
files. Is there any information on how long it would take to send out mail
files that are larger such as 100K, 500K or 1MB? I realize that there are a
lot of factors involved, but if anyone could pass along any numbers, I would
appreciate it.
Thanks,
Marc
