Other than allowing sending of mail only from a certain IP addresses and/or
username/password authentication, there is nothing else you can do (that I
have heard of).

The alternative is having an open relay.  Even if the relay is not marked
open, a user can send email if they know a user on the system like using
'help@', 'info@', 'root@', etc.  With authentication they need to know the
username and their password to send.  With IP level security the sender must
originate from the specified IP range.  A combination of using ESMTP and a
port change is better.  A combination of using ESMTP, port change and a
virtual IP (sorry... said firewall before and I meant our load balancing
appliance) is even better yet.

Yes, authenticated SMTP is the way to go if you can get your users to use
it.
