Do you mean messages that are sent from the post server to the smtp server on the same 
machine?  If so, then yes - the post server
would retry.  However, it's ususally best to use the Smart Delivery feature for that 
kind of mail.  If you are referring to mail
coming in from other servers to the smtp server then the remote server should retry if 
the smtp server sends back a transient
failure.
