iMS has both a Relay server and an SMTP server (the SMTP server can be the full SMTP
server or the free SMTP/B server).
iMS Professional has the Relay server and SMTP server. iMS-SE has the Relay server
and the SMTP/B server. I'll explain
a bit more about what each one is for:
Relay server
This server is a secure SMTP relay server that is typically used for relaying mail for
applications that need an SMTP
server. The relay server acts like a normal SMTP server except that its only purpose
is to take the incoming mail and
put it into the POST Server queue for delivery. So, you can use the Relay server for
CFMAIL, for example. The relay
server is secure in that it will only accept mail from machines that are in the
programmed range of IP addresses so you
don't need to worry about unauthorized use. The relay server can be run on a
non-standard port (a port other than 25)
so that it will not interfere with any other smtp server using port 25.
SMTP Server
This is the full iMS SMTP server. This one is not included with iMS-SE and requires a
set of ColdFusion (or other
application server) templates to function. We provide a freeware set of templates in
our FusionMail freeware product
that cna be used with the smtp server.
SMTP/B Server
This server is included free with any iMS server that includes a POST server but does
not have an SMTP server (iMS-SE is
a good example). The SMTP/B server will process incoming mail that has an address
like "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and is
used solely for processing bounced mail (to manage email lists, for example).
Anyway, for a typical iMS-SE installation you should disable the SMTP server and use
the Relay server instead. If you
want to use the SMTP/B server then you also need to change the Relay server to a
non-standard port like 2525.
