You can't accidentally delete it as it's done before DATA is called.

Not if you configure the server not to do this.  There is a setting for this in the 
SMTP server settings.

This depends on what's in your DATA template.

The only iMS server that sends mail is the POST server.

A copy of the received email is copied into the outgoing queue folder.
