the md5 method is the one I've been using, but there are complications.  For
example, sometimes the body is empty (an HTML message or an attachment).  I
can't MD5 the whole .mail file because the ESMTP ID and the delivery time
both change.  To the best of my knowledge, though, these are the only two
things that change in the duplicate message.

Yes, I could parse the email message, remove those two items, and MD5 the
remainder, but I'm hoping that there's an easier way.
