Keith,

X-headers sound like they make sense for you. Whether they get passed on or not is
probably an issue though. I find it's not necessarily which client is used, but how
the message is passed on (Forward vs. Redirect for instance). I think you'll need to
do some experimenting to find what works best for you. There might be some user
education involved. As for servers cutting out X-Headers... this would be a BAD thing
(non-RFC) but I suppose anything is possible (personally never seen that).

Otherwise, I'm not really sure how you'd pass the info. Does the info need to be
human-readable or are you using this for automated tracking purposes? By message
number to you mean the message ID? You could certainly embed stuff in there and
_theoretically_ the original message ID will stay with any forwarding or replying (in
the In-Reply-To and/or References header), although some badly-written clients
(especially Web-based like Hotmail) don't use In-Reply-To/References headers at all.
Also almost no email client shows those headers to the user by default. So, again,
depends on your environment and needs.

Your last option is the Subject line which is one thing that will stay with the
message for sure (unless a user edits it :), but of course mangling that with a bunch
of info isn't really useful for the user.

HTH,
-Max

PS. thanks for the plain text :) My comment wasn't just addressed to you btw,
nothing personal!
