When a server responds "550 5.7.1 ... Relaying denied" what does that mean? Does that just mean that the MX record for that email and subsequently the email server, does not host that account locally and is refusing to relay it?
I see this often with legitimate mail going to the correct address and it is almost always sendmail. The only time I have got close to an explanation was from a sys admin who told me their backup MX server was badly configured. Not sure what this meant but I suspect there is either a bug in sendmail or there is a common and easily made mistake when setting it up.
I always retry and it nearly always goes through. nothing more than a feeling but I think it may be something to do with sendmail updating its cache.
