Hi

You could easy store 10,000 to 15,000 accounts on the same IMS box considering using SQL stored procedures on a external server (for example). I could say most of your performance issues will relay on your application design and Cold Fusion related techniques to get a more efficient IMS server. Not really into IMS by it self.

We handle 11,200 users on a dedicated IMS server using a dedicated SQL with out any problems...   :D

Hello Howie and all!

I'm currently in the process of specifying a server setup for a potential customer.
This setup is a bit new to me and I hope to get valuable advice from you – I guess my needs is not very uncommon for some of you – In Norway this is a LARGE setup… (the biggest company in Norway has around 30 000 employees – and there is only a handful with above 20 000 employees)

The customer needs a system that grows over time – and I need some hints on what hardware / licenses to start with – so that the upgrade to more users is as easy and cost effective as possible.

The setup will be:

Dedicated iMS server with ColdFusion professional (pop3/smtp, antivirus and different filters, lists, autoresponders etc)
Dedicated MSSQL 2000 server
Dedicated CFMX/IIS web server(s) with CMS / portal including web mail (there will be lots of additional modules on this portal – and it will work towards the same DB as iMS)
Starting with 10Mbps internet access (shared with our other systems – average usage today is below 1Mbps)

iMS Enterprise with PrismAV (to be purchased after customer accept on offer (hint J)

The email accts need pricing and sufficient hardware/software in the following steps:

<500 accounts
500-1500 accounts
1500-5000 accounts
5000-10000 accounts
>10000 accounts

(I guess we’ll reach 5000+ accounts after about 2 years)

So – is there any “golden rule” on how to determine the needs for processing power / storage space / DB power?

Growing from <500 - <10000 accounts is probably not a thing to do on the same hardware – but what power should we start with – where would we need to upgrade to better servers – and how much storage and processing power is needed with say 15 000 email accounts.

Thanks in advance!
