I don't have an update on that yet but I will let you know when I do.

Howie,

Any updates available  on my original issue of tokens not being evaluated when an MX lookup fails?  You had indicated that youd get the engineers to do some testing this week.

When the POST Server sends mail the remote server will either accept or reject the mail (or, reject it temporarily).  If the remote server rejects the mail then this is considered a delivery failure and you could perform processing in the ReportPostStatus template if needed.  If the remote server accepts the mail and then rejects it the sender will usually receive an email to notify them of this rejection - this is a bounce.

Mail server responses are detailed in RFC 2821: http://www.imc.org/rfc2821

DNS names can match the NETBIOS names but they are really separate things and it doesn't matter if they match or not (of course, AD on a Windows server kind of blurs the distinction a bit).  The most important thing is that your email server has a valid reverse DNS and that the HELO from the server matches this.

HTH,

Howie

What is the difference between a bounce and a failure? Is there a list of codes somewhere? Like 550 "unknown" ?  Is anyone using DNS running on the same machine as IMS ?  Does the DNS name have to use the NetBIOS name ?
