I was trying out InitNG after following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InitNG. I had some errors which I posted about here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2542211&postcount=180. After seeing no responses to multiple requests for help in that thread, I decided to just uninstall and play with some other things to speed up my boot time. I am running Ubuntu 7.04. I booted into my non-InitNG session. When I aptitude removed I received the following error:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo aptitude remove initng-usplash Password: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Reading extended state information Initializing package states... Done Building tag database... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: initng-usplash 0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 81.9kB will be freed. Writing extended state information... Done (Reading database ... 112033 files and directories currently installed.) Removing initng-usplash ... /sbin/ng-update: 163: Syntax error: Bad substitution dpkg: error processing initng-usplash (--remove): subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2 /sbin/ng-update: 163: Syntax error: Bad substitution dpkg: error while cleaning up: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2 Errors were encountered while processing: initng-usplash E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) A package failed to install. Trying to recover: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ I know next to nothing about scripting otherwise I would have tried to decipher the error in the line of that script but it's greek to me. :) I've tried reinstalling initng but it still wants to complete the uninstallation of initng-usplash. It's now become a bigger problem as nothing in /etc/init.d will work. Example: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/samba start [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ I think I've provided all the information I've got, please let me know if you need anything else from me. I went to the IRC channel but no one was available so this is the last place I've got to try for help. :( Janelle
