I have been known every now and then to disagree
with some of EMU's positions, or recommendations, but I note in the current call
to a month of prayer something that I certainly agree with.
In the long list of things, there is a call for
repentance because ...
"We have sinned in the area of FINANCE Withholding that which is Gods by right and
using our access to finance as a lever or a weapon in
debate."
I have a difficulty however in that there are still
recommendations on the EMU website and from people in leadership positions in
EMU for congregations to withhold Presbytery/ Synod/Assembly funding at the
moment.
If "using access to finance as a lever or weapon in
debate" is a sin that calls for repentance
and if there are still calls for this action to
occur coming from the leadership of EMU
does that mean that by the standards of EMU, they
have placed themselves into the position of being "unrepentant
sinners"?
And if by the argument which is being proposed in
this whole debate at the moment, people who are living a life of unrepentant
sinning are unworthy to be in a position of leadership in God's
church,
Does it not mean that by the standards and
arguments that EMU is proposing, the EMU leadership has disqualified itself from
any position of leadership?
Or is life a little greyer than that?
Grace and peace
