Greetings all.
I make this suggestion reluctantly as I do not wish to get into a them and us dispute, but it seems to me that EMU are making a big thing over gathering 20,000 signatures supporting their claim.
I believe it would be possible to gather more than 20,000 signatures to a letter of support to ASC that said something like this.
We the undersigned wish to express our support for Assembly resolution 84 and its call for us to live together with diverse understandings of human sexuality and scripture.
I would even take a step back and say something like support Assembly processes and value the faithfulness of its members.
Because someone may actually disagree with R84, but still accept that it has been resolved appropriately and can therefore be accepted on the basis of "agreeing to disagree", or "living with the tension".
Whilst we may not all believe that the ordination Gay and Lesbian ministers is correct, we do believe that we can live together within the diversity of the church which calls us to recognise our differences as we embrace each other in the spirit of Christ's love.
Are we at the point where we need to do something like this yet? I'm not sure. Grace & Peace Allan
But I would say, too, that I'm not a fan of petitions in general. And in this particular case, what if your petition gets 40000 signatures? EMU will then reiterate that they only had 2 Sundays to collect theirs and that they were excluded from some congregations ... and maybe they'll be inspired to run another petition and aim for 60000 signatures. "My Dad's better than your Dad."
Which reminds me, happy Fathers Day for Sunday, all you who identify as male-gendered parent types :-).
Kind regards, Lindsay Brash.
