Actually he did respond. In yesterday's SMH, Freya Petersen wrote:
"Cardinal Pell yesterday gave a short statement to the Herald saying:
The church's views are well known and will not change. I support them.
In these situations the first 11 verses of Chapter 8 of St John's
Gospel give food for thought. [This is the account of the woman taken
in adultery, where Jesus said "let him who is without sin cast the
first stone".]
"I wish Monica well and acknowledge the contribution she has made. I
continue to regret the path she has chosen."

FP omits to mention Jesus' instruction to the woman herself: "Go and
sin no more" - which seems to be a common oversight these days.

So, to link it with another current thread, there is a problem with
hermeneutics in all this: "What is the Bible - or God through the
Bible - actually saying to us today?"
