I see the calling as having more immediacy.
When Jesus called his new followers, they didn't respond with a
"Cool, I'll just check my iPAQ and see when I can fit it in".

I see it being more like:

Jesus, pointing his finger: "You, you and you - follow me!"
And they did. So they risked everything - and they went on to learn.
