Willing to pay more tax, for community services

Peter Costello is quoted as saying "I have never, ever come across anybody ... who believes they should pay more tax" ("Services first, but then it's the real world choice of tax cuts", Herald, May 10). The Treasurer does not understand us.

If paying my taxes means people can stop travelling three hours to Wagga or Sydney for vital chemotherapy, then I want to pay. If paying my taxes means disadvantaged children in public education have better resources for their learning and their lives, then I want to pay. If paying my taxes means that people cut adrift by this Government might be gathered back in, then please don't cut my taxes.

I am a citizen, responsible for my society and those around me, not merely a "taxpayer" - with my value and contribution measured out in dollars and cents. The best reward I can imagine with the proclaimed surplus is financial resources invested in our communities, in particular where the need is greatest, not simply where the voices are loudest or the voters most susceptible.

Reverend Simon Hansford, Queanbeyan, May
