Hi Greg

Christianity is NOT the roots of Europe. Not unless you begin history at 313CE, that is, and totally ignore all other religious traditions that continued in many of the areas now part of the EU
If I wanted to get into such a discussion I would need to have a statement naming those religions and their role in forming European culture.
Fair enough. But it would take me longer than I have available to marshal all the evidence, with geography and timelines included, in a reasonably compact form. If I were to answer fully(?), your question could make a PhD thesis. Shall I recommend some books to read instead?
Another point to discuss in parallel would be the extent to which Christianity has its roots in European culture.
Absolutely, but any degree to which that is so only further backs up my contention, because it argues for European culture (and the original statement didn't say culture, it just said "christian roots", let's remember - I assumed they meant history rather than culture) as being followed by christianity rather than resulting from it.
Also, can we avoid Judaeo-Christian collaborations that refer to dates as "C.E." please? Let's not assume too much in "common". Julian date 1835381 would be much less sectarian. ;-)
Could be, though how many people would understand it? Plus I'm not sure you can argue that CE is "judaeo-christian" when Jews still use a different calendar within their own culture/religion. However, most, if not all, cultures that use a different calendar among themselves work with CE years when interacting with the rest of the world, so in that sense it is Common. For myself, CE is the academic standard, so that's what I'm using.
