>From the article:
I am not saying the war failed to produce any positive outcomes
- happily, Saddam Hussein has gone. Nor that it cannot be
explained in constructive political terms - the shift to
democracy in Baghdad is most welcome.
Sadly, IRAQ doesn't have a democracy yet, and for all the 'pep talks'
from the coalition of the (w|k)illing I find it hard to imagine either
Afghanistan or Iraq ending up with a functioning democracy.
Democracy isn't easy, and it takes patience and tolerance (or maybe just
a lack of interest). Democracy doesn't always deliver what you want,
and you need to be willing to wait until the next election, or possibly
the one after that, to allow democracy to work.
Countries like Iraq and Afghanistan have large political and religious
groups and some of these, I believe, would not be willing of patient
enough to wait for democracy to deliver results.
While the US might deliver a 'democracy' to Iraq, but I don't believe it
would last. Not, at least, while Iraq's social structure remains as it
is. It only takes a single faction with enough fire-power to disrupt
democracy, and I think Iraq has enough 'factions' that this would be the
(sadly) reality of the situation.
