Special forum to mark 20 years of federal sex discrimination legislation
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and Work and Organisational Studies at the School of Business, University of Sydney are holding a forum on Women, Work and Equity to mark the 20th anniversary of the Sex Discrimination Act.
The 20th anniversary provides a timely opportunity to reflect on the current status of women and the extent to which the position of women in society has changed over the past 20 years. The forum will discuss women’s current economic and employment position and the effectiveness of the Act in addressing discrimination in the workplace.

Speakers:
Sex Discrimination Commissioner Pru Goward: women, work and equity.
Professor Marian Sawer: aspirations and apprehensions at the time of the introduction of the Sex Discrimination Act.
Dr Diana Olsberg: women's financial prospects in retirement, including the effects on women’s future retirement prospects of recent legislative and policy changes to superannuation.
Associate Professor Beth Gaze: progress made under the Sex Discrimination Act, including achievements, disappointments, disillusionments and alternatives.
Dr Sara Charlesworth: different workplace understandings of discrimination and the impact of the social and political context on those understandings over time;
Dr Marian Baird: the problems that confront women when combining paid work and maternity including pregnancy, maternity leave and return to work.
Associate Professor Gillian Whitehouse: pay equity over the past twenty years.
