Can I answer a question with a question? Is there any need to make a decision in a hurry? And by "in a hurry" I don't mean rapidly, I mean out of fear of what will happen if we *don't* make a decision.
Everybody gets them those doorknockers from another 'Church ?' They come to my door and like a Salesman want to know what church I go to, and when I tell them they carry on this there is some Christian that have wrong and maybe the Uniting Church is promoting this. Say that because we may except Gay people in our ranks we are mislead and supposedly going to Hell. They then discuses Laws and Revelations.
:-) They don't get the chance with me. I explain I'm a victim of clergy sexual abuse, that I don't feel safe in any place that isn't dealing appropriately with the issue, and ask what their church's policy is on dealing with abusers. I haven't had one single one who knows, yet, so I tell them to go away, find out, and talk to me when they come back. VERY few come back at all, and those that do get further grilling on how they can expect me to join a church which doesn't follow the procedures (with examples, of course).
And if a UCA person knocked on the door, they'd get exactly the same approach, by the way. How many here could answer, and would you return with the answers if you had to research it? Would you be prepared to be hit with recent case studies of how badly the church still deals with it, and how many ministers have been proven to be abusers and still remain in ministry? How would you justify evangelism to me in those circumstances?
And for those who think I harp on the topic, you can consider those rhetorical questions :-) But the challenge is there, for those who want to face it.
