I agree with Greg, or the whole concept of forgiveness and repentence can be thrown out.
I haven't thrown it out, because I don't have any problems with believing that god (supposing god is a personal being, which is debatable anyway) listens to all of the people some of the time, or some of the people all of the time, and is miraculously capable of working out who to listen to when.
Forgiveness and repentance doesn't depend on god fitting into the neat little boxes we construct for [him].
