Hi Rob,

My request for these books comes at least in part because of you stirring us up so much at the “Becoming Disciples” conference.  I found your conference enormously challenging and was a bit ticked off about the fact that you sent us off with the implicit charge “go and reform the church!” J

Who’d of thought that reforming the church was through the processes that we have had, and then lost, as part of our Christian tradition.  As simple yet as difficult of reviving baptism from some saccharine sweet moment in any Sunday in the year to the whole body drama that is competent to symbolise the most significant experience in our life – giving our life in discipleship to Jesus Christ.

So, just three people, including myself, have decided (actually we were already planning this … quite a synchronism … your ideas have given us a focus) to meet together weekly, being accountable to one another in the disciplines of prayer, spiritual growth, biblical study, and researching how to apply your model to the congregations in the Mid-Lachlan Mission Area.

Maybe we are putting up a little flag of defeat already, or maybe we are being realistic, but we are unsure if the whole church will want to follow the path of authentic/radical discipleship.  So, we have decided to learn about Wesley’s model which was designed to revive the church through a para-organisation.  We don’t know about Wesley’s model but for ourselves we intend on doing everything we can to be at work in the church proper to also see if we can help the church toward the type of discipleship (and discipleship process) that you are promulgating.

I will contact Robert Gribben.

Thanks (a lot! J )

Tom

Hi Tom,

A good starter for the enneagram is Riso and Hudson's "Personality Types: Using the Enneagram for Self-Discovery". My copy was about $30 some years ago. It is long (over 500 pages), but you can get the gist of it in the early chapters. The rest discusses each of the personality types in detail.

Ann Siddall presented some material on journalling at the "Becoming Disciples" consultation last week, which will go onto the disciples.unitingchurch.org.au website when I get a chance.

As for Methodism, it might be worth emailing Robert Gribben ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). He teaches at the theological hall in Melbourne.

Hope that helps.

Subject: Books inquiry

Hi everyone,

Wondering if people have some suggestions regarding these topics:

  1. A Book on the Enneagram – one that isn’t too long but sufficient as a starting point.
  2. A book on John Wesley’s development of Methodism (BEFORE it became an independent denomination).  Including the principles of classes and spiritual development.
  3. A book on Christian Journaling.

All comments welcome.

Tom
