I think this could provide an opening for investigative thought. Obviously, the
theology of Paul ("when I am weak, then I am strong") is anti "survival of the
fittest". I must attest to his truth from personal experience. I mean, I have
survived! The words of 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 apply to me.

However, I think the avenue that evolution involves more than the notion of
"survival of the fittest" may offer promise. As much as atheistic evolutionists
(as distinct from theistic evolutionists) would have us believe that all the
principles of evolution are known, I think the fossil record speaks against it.
In actual fact, the sudden appearance of life-forms in the geological record
would suggest that more than mutation and adaptation is involved. (I remember a
talk by a retired professor on this at one Seminar Week at UTC.)

That leaves us with the challenge of assimilating theology and science at a
point where the scientific process is not properly understood. Thus, Hull or
Gulley cannot really make their claims.

At the same time, it leads us back to the problem of double causation. What
physical processes caused the evolution of life on Earth? When the answer *is*
known, following the principle of parsimony or "Occam's Razor", what place is
there for God also as cause? (One of life's ironies - William of Occam was a
Franciscan theologian!)
